At this rate, it’s only a matter of time before Jonathan Manziel gets himself into some serious trouble. With every flip of the calendar, it seems like a different piece of Manziel-drama comes to light in the public eye. ESPN Senior Reporter Wright Thompson chronicled the life and times of “Johnny Football” in his latest piece, which received critical acclaim last week.
Yesterday, Outside The Lines reported that Manziel accepted thousands of dollars for signed memorabilia earlier this year. This report claims that autographs deemed “genuine” were signed by Manziel around the time of the BCS title game. If this is true, his actions could jeopardize his career as a college football player. Let me tell you, I have a bad feeling about this one. I’m starting to think that Johnny Football’s time at College Station is about to be over.
If the allegations against Manizel are true, the result will be at least a one year ban from playing college football, which would likely lead Manziel to attempt to jump to the pro game by way of the supplementary NFL Draft later in the month. Mark Emmert, NCAA president, is not looking to take anything lightly on the young quarterback.
I have a feeling Emmert, like he had done with Penn State, is looking to set an example out of Johnny Football. I can’t really blame him. Making five figures off signing miniature helmets just might have spited Manziel his entire first NFL-contract. C’mon, Johnny be good.
