Tug of war is usually thought of as a fun and innocent game played by schoolchildren, but a couple of high school students in Los Angeles are living through a nightmare, as they had their fingers torn off during the game.

The two unidentified students, a boy and a girl, were playing the game to celebrate homecoming at South El Monte High School in San Gabriel Valley when the rope mangled their fingers.

Los Angeles County Fire Captain Miguel Garcia told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune that doctors are hoping they will be able to reattach the fingers.

The students were both varsity athletes, with the girl on the soccer team and the boy on the football team.

They were both taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center.

“They are both stable and the parents were by their bedside,” said hospital spokeswoman Rosa Sacca.

“They were getting ready to be taken to the operating room to try to re-attach the fingers.”
