Floyd Mayweather Jr. will put his undefeated record and his reputation as boxing pound-for-pound best fighter on the line when he steps into the ring to fight junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

The fighters agreed on Wednesday to meet on Sept. 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

“I chose my opponent for September 14th and it’s Canelo Alvarez,” Mayweather tweeted to break the news. I’m giving the fans what they want.”
Mayweather, 36, last fought on May 4 when he defended his welterweight (147 pounds) title and scored an easy victory over Roberto Guerrero. Mayweather also holds the junior middleweight title. The Mayweather-Canelo will be contested at a catch weight of 152 pounds.

Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 Kos) is 22 years old and is coming off his most impressive fight when he won the World Boxing Council 154-pound title by defeating Austin Trout in front of 40,000 in San Antonio.

“This is the fight I have wanted for a while,” Alvarez told ESPN.com from the Golden Boy Promotions offices in Los Angeles after signing his contract. “It’s been talked about for a while now, and now that it’s signed, sealed and delivered, I am very happy. I will be the first to beat Floyd.”
