AT&T has handled the iPhone since its first launch in 2007 when AT&T was chosen as the launch carrier in the US. AT&T has stated that the iPhone 5 was their biggest launch so far in terms of units sold on opening day. The iPhone 5 was actually sold out on Apple’s website for launch day shipments. In 1 hour iPhone 5 shipments were pushed back 1 week. AT&T was quoted saying:AT&T set a sales record with iPhone 5 over the weekend, making it the fastest-selling iPhone the company has ever offered. Customers ordered more iPhones from AT&T than any previous model, both on its first day of preorders and over the weekend.

Now, AT&T did not provide actual numbers but likely will at a later date but they did state that they were ‘blown’ away at the demand for the iPhone 5 which was much greater than any previous iPhone launch to date.

Here is an idea of what kind of numbers Apple.com has seen in the past for pre-orders. On June 2010 according to macrumors Apple took 600,000 preorders for the iPhone 4 and in 2011 1,000,000 for the iPhone 4S.

Apple will announce their iPhone 5 sales figures sometime later today or this week if they follow the same pattern as previous years. I expect the numbers to be much greater than previous years since the iPhone 4S sold out in 22 hours vs the iPhone 5 in 1 hour. What do you think the numbers will look like?
