By unveiling its Generation EQ Concept at the Paris Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz is making clear its intent: to be at the top of the luxury electric vehicle category by 2025. The futuristic SUV coupé sports an all-new architecture for Mercedes, housing two electric motors generating a total system output of up to 300 kW (about 400 horsepower) and a range of up to 310 miles. The vehicle’s sleek styling uses cameras instead of mirrors and ditches the unnecessary grille with illuminated LED optical fibres. The interior is similarly space-age, with touch controls in lieu of traditional switches and knobs, and a 24-inch widescreen display in favor of a conventional instrument cluster

By 2025, Mercedes plans to have 10 fully electric cars in its automotive lineup, and the company expects 15-25 percent of global sales to come from EVs. The Generation EQ will be the first car built on the new platform, using a blend of steel, aluminum and carbon fiber that’s completely scalable. Expect pricing that’s comparable to “reasonably equipped” GLC — around $45,000 to $50,000.
