The first day back after summer break at Baltimore Perry Hall High School turned out to be a living nightmare. Around 10:30 a.m., a 15-year-old student pulled out a gun on a 17-year-old student for unknown reasons and let off two shots, one striking the victim in his back and leaving him in critical condition. According to witnesses who spoke to WBAL-TV, the shooter allegedly said, “I’m going to kill you,” before pulling out his gun and bucking shots.

Miranda Wienecke, a junior, recalled her version of how the shooting unfolded. “I saw people getting under the table. Then I saw people running. We heard this huge boom, then there was another one, everything happened very fast.”

Some witnesses said that after the shots were fired some students ran, while others let a shower of food rain down on the shooter in order to prevent him from letting off more shots. That is when a brave guidance counselor made his move, knocking the gun out of the 15-year-old’s hands and locking him in a bear hug before pinning him up against some nearby vending machines, where he held him until police arrived.

The names of the shooter, victim, and guidance counselor have been withheld from the public so far. Hopefully the student who was shot will make a full and swift recovery. Police are investigating exactly what prompted the shooting.
