Doc is a Clipper. The roller coaster ride that Clippers fans (and Boston Celtic fans) have been riding the past week or 2 (from Doc, to no Doc, to Byron Scott, ultimately back to Doc) has finally come to an end Sunday. For only one unprotected 2015 first round draft pick, the Los Angeles Clippers have secured one of the NBA’s more prestigious pieces, in head coach Doc Rivers.
This is somewhat of a shock to me, as rumor circulated today of former New Orleans (and Chris Paul) coach, Byron Scott, emerging as the front runner for the currently-filled position. What’s especially ironic, is that Scott’s former point guard, Chris Paul, seemed to have played a big role in reinitiating talks to land Doc in Hollywood. It will be interesting to see just how much of an impact Rivers will have on Paul’s decision to remain playing at the Staples Center (in blue and white, as opposed to purple and gold–potentially).
Curious what’s in it for Boston. A mere 1st round pick, that will likely be towards the bottom tier of the round (due to LA’s star-studded roster), is a small price for one of the league’s best coaches. Smells like a hasty money-rooted impulse by the Celtics organization, if I’ve ever smelt one. I wouldn’t be surprised to see The Big Ticket or The Truth make their way over to the west coast in response to this move.
