The president of South Africa has confirmed that Nelson Mandela passed away at the age of 95 today, December 5.
Mandela served as the president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, becoming the first black president of a country plagued by racial divide, as well as the first to win a completely free democratic election in the country.
After spending decades in prison between 1964 and 1990 on a life sentence for high treason and conspiracy against the state, Mandela became known as Africa’s greatest symbol of peace, earning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
Nelson Mandela will forever serve as a symbol for hope, peace and unity, as his message will continue to live on.
