This election made history, achieving many things for the first time in the United States. With widespread support, the citizens of this country made a statement and stood for what they believed in.
Oh, we’re not talking about the reelection of President Obama, by the way.
Colorado passed Amendment 64 last night, becoming the first state to ever legalize the recreational use and commercial sale of marijuana.
The amendment legalizes the sale and possession of up to one ounce of marijuana for residents who are over the age of 21.
Residents will also be allowed to grow up to six plants in their homes.
In addition to the legalization, the plant will also be taxed, with the first $40 million in revenue raised annually to “be credited to the public school capital construction assistance fund.”
Voters in Washington passed a similar bill, that legalizes the recreational use of up to an ounce of marijuana.
While Oregon also had a similar proposal on the ballot, they failed to pass it.
Massachusetts, which had already decriminalized marijuana, passed Question 3 last night, which legalized medical marijuana.
The fallout of the legalization in Washington and Colorado may see federal intervention, with agencies like the DEA intervening. It will be interesting where the federal government will stand, and if they will respect the Tenth Amendment, which protects states’ rights.
