The 2022 Asian Games has announced that both Esports and breakdancing will join its medaled program for the upcoming sporting event.
The announcement was made by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) General Assembly, which has now planned six different Esports medal events for 2022 with the help of the Asian Electronic Sports Federation.
“This isn’t only a success story for AESF alone – but the Esports community as a whole,” says the Federation’s president Kenneth Fok. “Our past successes are rightfully celebrated but we always look forward to bigger and better achievements. Seeing Esports returning to the Asian Games in 2022 is a great landmark to achieve following years of hard work and commitment. A special you to the OCA for entrusting us with this honor and we promise to make the best out of this opportunity.”
While it’s the first time Esports has become a medaled event at the Asian Games, it previously debuted as a demonstration sport at the 2018 event, and subsequently made its way onto the program in Macau’s 2007 Asian Indoor Games.
The 2022 Asian Games will take place between September 10 to 25 in Hangzhou, China, covering 482 events spanning across 40 different sports.
