Facebook is in the process of developing a new smartphone application that will track the user’s location.
Scheduled to be released in mid-March, the app is designed to help users find nearby friends; the app would run even when it isn’t opened on the device.
The tracking app is going to help sell ads based on the users’ daily habits. Many privacy advocates are concerned about the way the company handles personal information.
Peter Deng, a product director originally from Google, is leading Facebook’s location software development. Mark Zuckerberg has been stressing the need for new mobile products.
“A lot of what we had to do last year was simply to improve our mobile development process,” said Zuckerberg.
“The next thing we’re going to do is get really good at building new mobile-first experiences.”
