A young French girl watched in horror as her 15-year-old sister was bitten in half by a shark.
The two were snorkeling in the Indian Ocean just 15 feet from the shore. The girl was killed instantly in the attack, which took place Monday afternoon on the island of Reunion, located off the coast of Madagascar.
The shark dragged the girl into the water, cut her torso in two and then swam away with part of the body hanging out of its mouth, the Daily News reports.
Gina Hoarau, head of public safety on the island, told the Daily News that the two girls were swimming in a banned area along St. Paul bay.
“The operation to recover the upper part of her body is ongoing,” she added.
Huguette Bello, mayor of St. Paul, revealed that the girl and her family had vacationed on the island many times.
Her father ran St. Paul’s yacht club.
This is the second reported fatal shark attack in three months. A 36-year-old Frenchman on his honeymoon was killed in May while surfing off the Brisants de Saint-Gilles Beach.
