Anyone who dares question the honesty and decency of the youth should talk to Devon Gluck, the University of Delaware student who returned the $1,800 that was mistakenly dispensed to him by an ATM.
Gluck said that the on-campus ATM he used was making strange noises when he attempted to make a withdrawal but was greeted with 18 $100 bills instead.
“My eyes just opened really wide, and I was like, ‘Oh my god, this is $1,800 right here,’ ” Gluck told Delaware Online. “It’s pretty crazy.”
He then brought the cash home, debating what he should do with it. After discussing the situation with his father, however, he made the decision to turn the money in to the PNC bank that owns the ATM.
“After a couple days of just thinking about it, the right thing would be just to return the money,” he said. “I mean, it was just eating at me at the time because it isn’t mine and I didn’t even know what to do with it.”
The bank manager thanked him and told him that the money had in fact come out of another student’s account, who would be properly refunded for the fault ATM.
“Honesty is always the best policy when talking about money, and keeping money that you’re not authorized to have for any amount of time is unlawful,” the bank’s spokeswoman said.
The bonus? Gluck is thinking about pursuing a career in banking and finance, and will now look to use his assistance and kinship with the bank to possibly secure a position.
“I kind of just thought maybe I can get something good out of this,” he said. “I’ll definitely feel better, and I’m looking into going into banking and finance, so I felt like this was a good opportunity to meet someone, get a good reference and do the right thing.”
Most modern bankers would have definitely made away with the money. Maybe this will be the guy who finally turns the greedy morale of major banks around!
