Jay-Z has been a busy man these past couple of weeks. Not only has he announced that he is partnering his Roc Nation label with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) to create a sports management group, but it has now been revealed that he is looking to relinquish his ownership with the Nets to become a full time sports agent and represent NBA players.
Sports agents cannot sign athletes when they have ownership to a team in their respective league, for obvious reasons, so it looks like Jay is ready to take the jump.
While he only owns less than one percent of the team’s equity, he played a big role in the rebranding of the Nets and was one of the main reasons they moved to Brooklyn.
However according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, Hov has already begun divesting his ownership and looks to become a certified NBA agent by the end of this week.
As we all know Jay has already signed New York Yankees’ Robinson Cano and New York Giants’ Victor Cruz. So it only makes sense that he targets basketball players next.
This entire venture is an incredibly savvy move by the rapper-turned-mogul as his name and brand should attract some top tier talent. While it remains unclear if he will actually be out there negotiating player contracts, Jay certainly knows how to play his role and make things look good.
It is going to be very interesting to see what kind of athletes he will be able to lure in. My guess is a few guys from the Nets and maybe some dude in Miami that Hov is good friends with by the name of LeBron James.
While the Nets organization and fans may be upset that he is leaving the team, I’m sure they won’t stay mad for long if Jay can bring the King to Brooklyn. This could very well be the ulterior motive for this entire move.
