Jamaica may be world-renowned for its cultural connection to cannabis, or what locals call “ganja.” But not many know that the plant has also been kept illegal there for more than a century.

With marijuana now fully legal in Uruguay and Colorado and Washington state, some believe the time has finally come for Jamaica to legalize as well.

The economic potential alone is a convincing argument, but doctors and human rights activists are also taking part in the push.
