Meek Mill discusses receiving first hand critiques from Jay-Z regarding his “Dreams And Nightmares” album, and how it gives him more confidence.
After dropping a banger of a mixtape with Dream Chasers 2, and adding some notable features on other MMG tracks, fans have been hotly anticipating Meek Mill’s debut studio album Dreams And Nightmares. Fortunately for the Philly rapper, he has access to some of the biggest names in hip hop to get feedback on his product, and even Jay-Z gave Meek some constructive criticism before the album was completed.
Jigga’s Roc Nation manages Meek Mill, so this gives him exclusive access to the rap icon. In an interview on RapFix Live the 25 year old emcee talks about how getting an honest opinion from Jay-Z and discusses playing his LP for Hov, “I always sit down with Jay-Z sometimes and play my album… He likes me as a person I guess, so I get to come through, play a little music for him here and there like that.”
While most of the feedback from Jay is positive, it’s the criticism that can be hard to take, but Meek says this ultimately makes him a better rapper. When Jay-Z isn’t feeling a certain track he’ll be honest about it, Meek recalls him saying, “’Don’t even worry about that joint, go to the next one,’” and even someone of Mill’s talent can start second-guessing himself, “Hov will mess up your whole confidence. That joint might not even make the album no more because you got a great like that telling you [no].”
In the end, this kind of criticism only strengthens the MMG rapper’s resolve saying, “It just feels good to have somebody at that status, at that level to recognize your talent…just gives you more confidence, motivation.”
