Two NBA scouts are predicting that they 2013 NBA draft will be “brutal,” according to the Charlotte Observer. Said one anonymous scout:
“I don’t think this is a good draft. This is the year you should consider trading your draft pick – no matter where it is.”
Why will this draft be especially bad?
The NBA has had a rule for a few years now that players must attend college for at least one year before being drafted. One scout is saying that this rule has caused several prospects to jump to the NBA immediately after their freshmen year, rather than staying in school.
Fans and scouts alike would agree that it takes at least three years of college basketball before someone is ready to play professionally. We have witnessed players such as DeMarcus Cousins and Derrick Favors waste the early stages of their careers learning how to hang with the best basketball players in the world rather than actually posing a threat to their skills.
Scouts are also predicting that the cyclical nature of talent in the NBA will run out in 2013. There was undoubtedly an abnormally large amount of talent in the 2003 and 2008 drafts, so it seems likely that our luck will run out in the near future.
As frightening as this outlook is, it does make a lot of sense. Let’s hope the league doesn’t get overrun by a herd of talentless imbeciles in 2013 just because we’ve had it so good the past few years.
