We all remember the days of the Concord airplane. Traveling at speeds faster than the speed of sound allowed for fast travel between the U.S. and Europe, among other countries.
Unfortunately, the supersonic speed of the Concord caused significant damage to those on the ground so it was discontinue
XCOR Aerospace is introducing Lynx, a suborbital spacecraft that will take off and land like a plane, but will travel 62 miles off the ground at a cruising speed of Mach 3.5.
The plane will be able to get you from New York to Tokyo in an hour and a half! Test flights are set to start in early 2013.
Unfortunately, the current design of the plane only seats two (including the pilot) but is a big stepping stone towards commercial space travel.
