Premiering at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival later this week, Dope is about Malcolm, a nineties hip-hop aficionado and a bona fide geek who loves video games and computers. The film, directed by Rick Famuyiwa, deals with the struggles of living and growing up in modern day Inglewood, California amongst all the crime. Famuyiwa was inspired by his own upbringing in the area and wanted to create something that paid homage to indie directors like Paul Thomas Anderson and Wes Anderson who make movies with a “personal, character-driven aesthetic”. Rapper A$AP Rocky became interested after helping girlfriend Chanel Iman with her role in the film and landed a supporting role. Take a look at the trailer for Dope below.
