Today, the U.S. Department of Education announced Penn State is expected to pay a record $2.4 million USD fine for failures surrounding former Nittany Lions Assistant Coach Jerry Sandusky’s child molestation cases; or more specifically for violating the Clery Act, which requires colleges and universities to report campus crimes and warn people if their safety is threatened.
In 2011, following a two-year grand jury investigation, Sandusky was arrested and charged with 52 counts of sexual abuse, where his victims were young boys during a 15-year period from 1994 to 2009. On June 22, 2012, Sandusky was found guilty on 45 charges and was sentenced on October 9 to 30-60 years in prison.
The aforementioned record fine comes after a five-year federal investigation into how Penn State officials handled complaints about Sandusky before he was charged in 2011.
Penn State says it’s reviewing the findings.
