Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports is reporting that the veteran quarterback and his agents are looking for a new deal worth $25 million per year when they discuss an extension with the Lions.
Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford has earned midseason MVP chatter in leading his team beyond what many expected, and with his contract set to expire in 2017, he will explore an extension with Detroit after the season. Stafford’s agents will seek a deal that would top Aaron Rodgers at $25 million per season, league sources said, a target they envisioned before the season and one bolstered by his excellent play.
Stafford has the 5-4 Lions in playoff contention — completing 67.3 percent of his passes for 2,373 yards, 18 touchdowns, and five interceptions — all while playing the best ball of his career.
