Science teacher Kevin Pope was arrested Friday for beating a 16-year-old John V. Lindsay Wildcat Academy charter school student, reported the New York Daily News. The beating and subsequent robbing allegedly happened because the student kept 48-year-old Pope’s $4,000 in a drug deal between the two.
The attack reportedly happened near the Bronx school yesterday. Pope beat the student and collected his wallet, gold chain, and iPhone to make up for the $4,000 Pope lost in a bad marijuana buy with the teen, police said. A source told the New York Post that after the beating, Pope threatened the unidentified student with another beating if he didn’t have the money in a month, and also threatened to have the student’s mother sexually assaulted.
Pope paid $4,000 for a pound of marijuana, possibly looking to resell. The teen put Pope in contact with a drug dealer in June, but kept Pope’s money. The teen told police he then met with the drug dealer, who wanted $7,000.
The student reportedly suffered deep wounds on the back of the head that required staples. Pope has been charged with assault and battery.
