As evidenced by its recent push into live streaming, Facebook clearly wants to own the video space. Today at Facebook’s F8 developer’s conference in San Francisco, the company revealed a 360 degree video camera and software system built in-house. Dubbed the Facebook Surround 360, the futuristic device has 14 cameras ringed around its edge, along with one fish-eye camera pointing up and two additional cameras pointing down. It’s able to record two hours of 360-degree video at up to 60 frames per second, as much as 8k per eye. Instead of selling the device, which costs roughly $30,000 to build, Facebook plans to to make the designs for its camera available for free to the public later his summer, via Github. The software will also be free.
