Thailand’s Kasetsart University recently debuted a new and efficient technique to keep its students from cheating on exams: paper headbands with two sheets of paper stapled to each side.

Students seriously have to wear these absolutely ridiculous and utterly humiliating headdresses during tests, a rule that has understandably created a bit of controversy within the community.

This photo of a class at the university’s agriculture school taking a test was uploaded to the university’s Facebook page.

Cheaters

The Bangkok Post reports that at a press conference, Kasetsart officials explained that it was actually the students who voted to adopt the hats.

“No student was forced to wear a hat. Instead, all were happy to do so and thought it was fun. They felt more relaxed during the test,” said Nattadon Rungruangkitkrai, a lecturer in the school’s agricultural department. “It was not meant to indicate that Kasetsart students often cheat on exams,” Rungruangkitkrai added. “I apologize if the photo makes other people look at my students in a negative way.”
Shortly after the press conference, however, the school discovered that the photo had triggered an inevitable onslaught of insults thrown at both Thailand and the university, enough backlash to, according to the Bangkok Post, persuade the school to abolish the hats forever.
