States are beginning to decriminalize and even legalize marijuana, but the federal government is superseding the states by raiding facilities that legally sell marijuana.
The Department of Justice recently resumed its practice of issuing raids on dispensaries that legally sell marijuana, with the Drug Enforcement Administration raiding several medicinal marijuana dispensaries in Washington State.
Despite the fact that Colorado and Washington State have legalized marijuana for recreational use, the federal government has moved in and infringed on theses states’ rights.
Because marijuana is still illegal under federal law, the DEA raided facilities that sell marijuana to cancer patients who can’t undergo other treatment.
According to NBC, one of the raids was on the Bayside Collective in Olympia, Washington’s state capital.
The DEA seized business records and approximately $2,500 worth of marijuana.
“It’s humiliating,” said Casey Lee, who works at the clinic. “They don’t get to see the cancer patients.”
This revisits the issue of states’ rights versus federal rights, one that has been a prevalent throughout American history. The question is, where is the line drawn?
With the majority of Americans now in favor of legalizing marijuana, when will the federal government finally recognize a shift in the needs of the nation?
