Trayvon Martin’s parents have settled a wrongful death claim, reportedly for more than $1 million, against the Florida homeowners association where their son was killed.
Trayvon was fatally shot by Neighborhood Watch volunteer George Zimmerman at the Retreat at Twin Lakes townhomes in Sanford, Florida in February of last year. Zimmerman claims he shot Trayvon in self-defense after he saw the 17-year-old acting suspiciously in the neighborhood.
Part of the wrongful death settlement was made public on Friday, as reported by the Orlando Sentinel. But the amount of the settlement was kept confidential.
However, the amount is believed to be more than $1 million because during earlier proceedings concerning the claim, Trayvon’s parents had rejected an offer of that amount from the homeowner’s association’s insurer, Travelers Casualty and Surety Co. of America.
Under the terms of the settlement, Trayvon’s parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, agreed to drop their wrongful death claim as well as claims for pain and suffering, loss of earnings and expenses. But the Martins aren’t finished in court. Their lawyer, Benjamin Crump, says he intends to file suit against Zimmerman, as well.
Zimmerman is currently awaiting trial and he is charged with second-degree murder in Trayvon’s death. Attorneys for Martin’s family have accused Zimmerman of racially profiling the teen and shooting him ‘in cold blood.’
