Almost two years ago, Uber set up an Advanced Technologies Center (ATC) in Pittsburgh with one mission in mind: to make self-driving Ubers a reality. Now the autonomous vehicles have hit the streets of Steel City. Though the program is still in its pilot stages, a self-driving Uber will send along a safety driver to make sure the ride goes smoothy, who will sit in front for occasions when the driverless car is not up to the task. Uber’s goal with this new technology is to further its mission and to improve society by reducing the number of traffic accidents, free up space taken up by parked cars, and to cut down congestion.

For all those ready to try it out, you must be within the operation boundaries that Uber has set out for its autonomous vehicles. Currently this includes, downtown Pittsburgh, across the Allegheny River in the North Shore neighborhood, and eastward past Carnegie Mellon University toward Shadyside.
