UCONN Men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun will announced his retirement today at 2pm. A press conference was scheduled and Calhoun will be replaced by former NBA point guard and current UCONN assistant coach Kevin Ollie. Calhoun is said to want to keep the coaching job in the Huskies family and Ollie being an alum and beloved on campus makes him a perfect fit.
Calhoun’s achievements include; being a member of the Basketball Hall Of Fame, winning 873 games (6th most all-time), he is second all time in games coached, he has led UCONN to three national championships, 13 sweet 16s, 9 Elite 8s, and 4 Final Fours, and he is the oldest coach ever to win a national championship at the age of 68.
Calhoun also coached and recruited many future NBA talent at UCONN. Ray Allen, Rudy Gay, Rip Hamilton, Caron Butler, Emeka Okafor, Ben Gordon, and Kemba Walker are just a few that had the privilege of learning from Calhoun. A Hip injury last month is rumored as being the icing on the cake to why Calhoun is breaking his contract and leaving early. College basketball will certainly miss a great coach and leader in Jim Calhoun.
