Today, Marvel fans can kick off their Memorial Day Weekend with a few of their favorite super heroes. On May 27th, Marvel’s latest film “X-Men: Apocolypse” hits the big screen as Marvel continues to reboot and unleash new chapters in their comic history.
I saw “X-Men Apocolypse” here in Atlanta earlier in the month on May 9th but I wanted to save my review until the film’s actually release date so it would be fresh in your memory bank as you head to the theater this weekend. The story line of the film is very simple. Directed by Bryan Singer,”X-Men: Apocolypse” follows the critically acclaimed global smash hit “X-Men: Days of Future Past” with a great story line picking up where they previously left off.
Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.
The film was very entertaining and if your a true Marvel comics fan I believe you will appreciate how the film introduces us to new characters who weren’t in previous films (Nightcrawler, Quicksilver, Jubilee) but I can’t call the film a classic. I wish we were able to see more of the new characters in the film. I grew up a fan of the X-Men cartoons back in the 90’s and it appears that Bryan Singer and his team focused on that era of the X-Men series in this film. The films takes us to Cairo, where Apocolypse is reborn and the new cast of X-Men must learn their purposes while saving the planet Earth.
The new cast of X-Men characters include Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Scott Summers/Cyclops (The Sheridan), Angel (Ben Hardy), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Evan Peters (Quicksilver), Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), Psylocke (Olivia Munn) and Jubilee (Lana Condor) and we get a surprise cameo from one of the original X-Men.
Overall if your a fan of the X-Men and Marvel films, “X-Men: Apocolypse” is a must see as Marvel prepares for their next set of X-Men films. Without spoiling the film I will say make sure you watch each scene carefully as we’ll be introduced to upcoming Marvel story lines as well.
