On April 20, UC San Diego student Danny Chong, 24, was arrested after his friend’s house was raided by the Drug Enforcement Administration. Following the arrest, Chong was placed in a holding cell, where he was kept for five days, without food, water or human contact. He resorted to drinking his own urine to stay alive, Bear Grylls style.
Chong was told he would be released the day of the arrest, because he wasn’t charged with a crime, but officers reportedly forgot about him. He told NBC that he was forced to drink his own urine for hydration and ended up carving his own flesh with glass and eating glass in an attempt to commit suicide.
“I had to do what I had to do to survive,” he told the station on Tuesday. “I was completely insane.” By day five, officers finally heard Chong’s cries for help and released him. When he was found, Chong was incoherent and was rushed to the hospital, where he was treated for a perforated lung.
