Fresh off of a remarkable 19-year career, culminating with a roller coaster ride of a season with the New York Knicks, Jason Kidd is already looking to get busy and start the second chapter of his basketball career.
It should come to no surprise that the future Hall of Fame guard is interested in coaching, being one of the greatest on-the-court leaders of all time, but apparently he has his sights set high. Instead of climbing his way up the ranks, he wants to skip out on all that and be appointed head coach of the Brooklyn Nets.
According to Yahoo! Sports, this is all very serious as Kidd is taking all necessary steps to make sure this happens next season. It has also been reported that top officials of the Nets organization are also taking his candidacy seriously.
And for what he’s done for the organization in the past, playing for them from 2001-2008 and leading them to two Eastern Conference Championships, why shouldn’t they?
At this point it’s still unclear who will take the job. The other leading candidate for the position right now is Pacers assistant coach Brian Shaw. And unless they can somehow pull Phil Jackson or Stan Van Gundy, it looks like they’ll be working with a first-year head coach.
Why not take the chance on Jason Kidd? He has proven himself to be a remarkable leader over the years and with Mark Jackson’s success as a first-time coach in Golden State for the past two seasons, there is no reason to not take the gamble.
This will add even more to the allure of the Nets being in Brooklyn and the resurgence of New York basketball. Just imagine how much more intense the rivalry with the Knicks would become. A former player with all of the intel in the world taking down his former team? Now that’s a subplot to look into.
